How to choose the right departure date for you?

Picking the right departure date for the Kailash Mansarovar tour 2026 is one of the most important decisions you will make for this trip. Although this yatra is done between May and October only, you will still have a different experience in each month.

Consider factors such as your availability, weather, festivals, and fitness level when choosing a departure date. Below, we have shared a helpful guide to pick the perfect Kailash Mansarovar tour departure date in 2026:

Weather and climate between May and October:

  • May to June: Clear skies, stable weather, fewer crowds, and moderate climate.
  • July to August: Hot and humid days, high pilgrimage season, high energy, unstable weather, heavy rainfall chance in Kathmandu, and light occasional rainfall around the Manasarovar area.
  • September to October: Clear mountain vistas, post-monsoon atmosphere, occasional rainfall in September, and cold climate in October.

Spiritual dates and festivals:

Saga Dawa Festival: One of the most auspicious times of the year to do the Kailash Mansarovar tour. In 2026, it will be celebrated on May 31.

Full moon departures: Considered a high-energy time to do the Kailash Kora and Mansarovar dip.

Consider your physical and mental readiness:

  • The Kailash Kora is difficult. It is three days of walking, covering around 53 kilometers. High altitude, cold climate, and uneven terrain make the Kora challenging. So, consider your fitness and see how much you can improve it before the trip starts, and choose the departure date accordingly.

Check your budget and mode of traveling:

  • Pick the Kailash Mansarovar tour program that best suits your budget. Helicopter tours are on the more expensive side than overland tours.

Your schedule:

  • The Kailash Mansarovar tour is usually a 14 to 16 days program. You can do it in 10 days as well, but you need a little big budget. Check your schedule and see when you can commit to doing this trip.

By considering the above factors, you can come to a date that best suits you. If you still need advice, feel free to talk to us.

Our guest during Kailash Yatra 2026

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026 is a once-in-a-lifetime divine journey in the Himalayas. It is the most significant pilgrimage for Hindus and also has religious importance for Buddhists, Jains, and Bon. Pilgrims usually look for Nirvana or Shambala or want to achieve liberation, embark on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.

It is believed that the water of Mansarovar Lake will get rid of all your sins, and completing the Kailash Kora will free you from the vicious cycle of birth and death. Given the remote location of Mansarovar Lake and Mount Kailash, traveling to these destinations is nothing less than a mythical journey.

Adventure is overshadowed by cultural significance, myths, stories, high divine energy, and faith. Many also believe that Mt. Kailash is the final destination of the soul. You can travel from Kathmandu to Kailash Mansarovar via a Lhasa flight or an overland drive through the Rasuwagadhi-Kerung border.

Whatever way you choose, you will travel to the western highlands of Tibet, where Mount Kailash is located in the Ngari prefecture.

We have curated this blog to help you streamline your Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026. You learn everything about Kailash Mansarovar’s trip in this blog, including route options, permits, transportation, guide, accommodation, food, etc.

Mount Kailash is known as the center of the Universe. Hindus call this mountain Kailash. For Bon, it’s Tise, Kang Rimpoche to Tibetan Buddhists, and Ashtapada to Jains. Pilgrims visit here to take a dip in Mansarovar Lake and perform parikrama around Kailash Parbat.

There are many fascinating rumors, myths, and stories around Mt. Kailash, such as

  • Rapid aging
  • Time distortion
  • Unusual energy field
  • Kailash is a Pyramid claim
  • Prototype of the Mount Meru claim
  • Mansarovar Lake and Rakshastal representing Yin-Yang

Hindus believe that Mt. Kailash is the home of Lord Shiva and his wife, Parvati. They believe climbing this mountain will offend the deity. Likewise, it is also believed that Shiva and Rishabhanatha store their knowledge in Kailash Parbat.

For Buddhists, Mt. Kailash is associated with Mt. Meru and connected to their cosmic axis. It is also the home of their god Chakrasamvara (Demchok).

Jains believe that their saint Rishabhadeva attained liberation on Mt. Kailash. For Bon, Kailash is the home of their founder, Tonpa Shenrab. Bon pilgrims do Kailash Kora in an anti-clockwise direction and others in a clockwise direction.

Many stupas, monasteries, chortens, and prayer flags surround Mansarovar Lake and are found along the Kailash Kora route. Similarly, there are also Rakshastal and Gauri Kunda, which are located nearby.

Landmarks during the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

Depending on your Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026 itinerary, you will explore many places and monuments.

For instance, if you start the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026 via Kathmandu-Lhasa flight, you will get to explore Tibetan cities like Lhasa, Gyantse, Shigatse, etc and historical sites like Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Pelkor Chode Monastery, Tashilhunpo Monastery, etc.

Similarly, if you do the Kailash Mansarovar overland tour, you will explore different Tibetan cities and monuments. Note that there are five monasteries around Mt. Kailash, and you will explore three of them during the Kailash Kora-

  • Choku Monastery- The first monastery on the outer circuit of Kailash Kora
  • Dirapuk Monastery- The end of the first day of Kailash Kora
  • Zutulpuk Monastery- The last monastery on the outer circuit of Kailash Kora
  • Selung Monastery- The first monastery on the inner circuit of Mount Kailash
  • Gyangzha Monastery- The largest monastery in the Mount Kailash area located on the inner circuit

Below, we have shared the major landmarks you will encounter between Mansarovar Lake and the Kailash Kora route.

  • Yam Dwar: Yam Dwar is the starting point of Kailash Kora. It is a quick drive from Darchen. Yam Dwar is considered the gate of the god of death, and the deity himself guards it. Crossing the gate is believed to leave the Earthly journey and start the holy journey. It is also believed that Yam Dwar is the way to heaven.
  • Tarboche Flagpole: Tarboche Flagpole is where Tibetans and other Buddhist believers gather during the Saga Dawa festival to attach their prayer flags and pray. It is a huge festival and a very auspicious time of the year, as per the Tibetan calendar.
  • Dirapuk Monastery: Dirapuk Monastery is one of the major religious temples on the Kailash Kora trail. Pilgrims stop by here to offer prayer, meditate, and receive blessings.
  • Dolma La Pass: The Dolma La Pass is the highest point you will reach during the Kailash Kora. Without climbing Mount Kailash, one can only hike to this point. It is located around 5,630 meters above sea level. Climbing this pass is strenuous and adventurous.
  • Gauri Kund: The Gauri Kund (lake) is located in two locations. One is near Mt. Kailash, and the other is on the way to Kedarnath Temple. During the second day of the Kora, you will see the Gauri Kund. It is believed that the goddess Parvati used to bathe in this lake.
  • Mansarovar Lake: Situated at 4,590 meters, Mansarovar Lake is one of the main highlights of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026. Many beliefs and stories are associated with this lake, and one of the biggest ones is that taking a dip in it will cleanse your sins.
  • Rakshastal: Rakshas means demon in Hindu. It is a saltwater lake located west of Mansarovar Lake at an altitude of 4,575 meters. The lake is associated with Ravana, the ten-headed demon king of Lake. According to legend, it is believed that Ravana performed intense austerities on the shores of this lake to appease God Shiva.
  • ZutulPuk Monastery: ZutulPuk Monastery is the last monastery on the Kailash Kora. It is built around Milarepa Cave, where he mediated.

Best time for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

The Kailash Mansarovar route is open from May to October. These months have the most preferred weather and climate conditions. The road is not blocked by snowfall, and the mountain views are crystal clear.

The Kailash Mansarovar region is trans-Himalayan, so rain does not fall heavily here. There can be occasional rainfall, though. It will clear the sky and make the scenery magical.

The climate is mild in May in Kathmandu and at higher altitudes. As it is the transitional month, there can be occasional rainfall in May.

June to August is the summer/monsoon period. Kathmandu sees heavy rainfall and a hot and humid climate. As you travel to Kerung and go beyond it, the climate begins to settle down.

September and October have the finest weather and climate conditions. No rainfall, stable weather, high visibility, clear sky, and stunning landscapes.

November to April is the coldest period in the Kailash Mansarovar area. The entire region is covered with thick snow blankets, and even the routes get blocked. So, Tibetan authorities do not issue travel permits for these months.

Our group resting during the Kailash Yatra

Altitude sickness during Kailash Yatra

Mansarovar Lake is located 4,590 meters above sea level, and you will hike up to 5,630 meters above sea level during the Kailash Kora.

Many pilgrims do not realize that traveling this high without previous high altitude experience can lead to altitude sickness and other discomforts. Therefore, acclimatization is important.

How to acclimate, and what does this mean? Acclimatization means getting used to a high-altitude environment, and you can acclimate by ascending slowly and taking rest days between the journey.

Does everyone suffer from altitude sickness during the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra? It depends on your body.

Not everyone suffers from altitude sickness, but it does not mean you will not suffer from it. It all depends on your body and how it is taking high altitude. The oxygen level is low at high altitudes and air pressure is high.

Our body is not used to that, so it retaliates if not acclimated, and travelers suffer from headaches, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, insomnia, difficulty breathing, etc.

If the early symptoms of altitude sickness are not controlled on time, it can get bad. We see pilgrims getting evacuated to nearby hospitals because of altitude sickness.

So, be aware of your body. If it feels any discomfort, get first aid from your guide. Keep yourself hydrated, rest a lot, and eat ample food. If you feel tired, take a rest and continue with the journey. Do not rush and over-exert yourself.

Passport and Visa requirements for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026

All modern amenities will be available in hotels. Guesthouses are simple accommodations. Bathrooms are made outside of the guesthouses, and travelers share them. Take it as a basic shelter for travelers so they do not have to camp.

WiFi, hot showers, charging, and mobile network

WiFi and mobile networks get unstable as you ascend towards Mansarovar Lake and further. It is because of the high altitude and unstable weather. You can purchase a tourist sim in Tibet.

You will mainly see bad mobile reception from Mansarovar Lake onwards. It is recommended that you pre-inform your family and share our contact details.

They can go through us if they have to contact you urgently because our guide carries a satellite phone to keep us updated.

Drinking water

To our guests, we provide unlimited bottled water throughout the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026. You can bring a reusable water bottle too.

As the climate is dry, it is important that you drink lots of water daily. By keeping yourself hydrated, you will decrease the risk of altitude sickness.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra travel insurance

Travel insurance is necessary for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026. First of all, the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is an expensive tour. So, it is best to cover your trip in the travel insurance just in case the tour sees any unseen interruption.

Second, even if it is an overland trip, high-altitude travel comes with a risk of altitude sickness. Altitude sickness is avoidable and treatable, but sometimes it worsens and requires more medical attention, so we have to evacuate you immediately.

Therefore, we recommend covering both land and air evacuation for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. Additionally, you can cover lost baggage, flight delays, etc, in your travel insurance.

Age restrictions for Kailash Yatra

Though there is no age restriction for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026, sometimes Chinese Authorities do not issue permits for travelers aged 70 or above. It’s not guaranteed.

Travelers below age 16 are required to travel with their parents or an identified guardian. We recommend that travelers planning the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026 thoroughly get checked up for the journey.

Completing Kailash Kora is tough, so please assess your fitness and prepare accordingly.

Oxygen cylinder for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

An oxygen cylinder is not required during the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. Many pilgrims carry their own handy oxygen cylinders. You can buy a portable oxygen cylinder for around Yuan 20-30 in Tibet.

We, Leaf Holidays Treks & Expedition, provide oxygen cylinders in an emergency. If you have a pre-medical condition that may require supplemental oxygen support, consult your doctor and inform us ahead of time.

We will plan and prepare the support you need in advance. Kindly cover your emergency medical assistance in your travel insurance to save on high evacuation expenses. Extra charges may incur. We will inform you ahead.

What to wear during the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?

All pilgrims should wear casual and comfortable clothing and walking shoes during the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026. Wearing clothes in different layers is the key while traveling at high altitudes.

You start with comfortable, breathable underwear, then wear an insulating layer (thermal clothes), add a base layer, and top it off with a top layer that is a windproof/waterproof jacket.

Even if you do the yatra between June and August, you will need warm clothing because nights and mornings are chilly at high altitudes.

We highly recommend that Indian pilgrims not wear a sari during the yatra, especially during the Kailash Kora. It will be very uncomfortable to walk on rugged terrain in a sari. Kurta pajamas (salwar suit) are a better option.

Likewise, you need to bring all your personal toiletries, cosmetics, medicines, etc, for the trip. Pack a small first aid kit and snacks that you are habitual to eat on a daily basis.

Below, we have made a list of things you will need during the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026. Follow this list to pack clothes, gear, and other essentials.

Best Time to Visit Himalayas Nepal – Complete Seasonal Trekking Guide

Introduction

Nepal is one of the most popular trekking destinations in the world, and the best time to visit Himalayas Nepal is during the spring and autumn seasons. During these months, the weather is mild, the skies are clear, and the air feels fresh, offering stunning views of the Himalayan mountains.

Since trekking takes place in high-altitude regions, temperatures can be colder at higher elevations, while lower areas remain relatively warmer during the day. Overall, the conditions are stable and sunny, making it an ideal season for a safe and enjoyable trekking experience.

everest base campleaf holidays

In this blog, we will explore the best seasons to trek in Nepal and highlight the unique features of each season.

Spring (March to May):

This season showcases Nepal at its most beautiful, as blooming rhododendron forests paint the trails with vibrant colors and add a unique charm to the journey. The lush landscapes, moderate climate, and stunning mountain views create an unforgettable trekking experience. Popular routes such as the Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit, and Langtang Valley are especially rewarding during spring, offering some of the finest Himalayan scenery.

Autumn (September to November):

Best Weather Conditions & Cultural Experience

Autumn is widely considered the most favorable season for trekking in Nepal and a key part of the best time to visit Himalayas Nepal. During this period, the weather is dry, stable, and exceptionally clear, offering outstanding mountain visibility.

The trails are often slightly less crowded than in spring, allowing for a more peaceful trekking experience. Autumn also brings a vibrant festive atmosphere, with major Hindu and Buddhist festivals adding cultural richness to the journey. Popular routes such as Annapurna, Everest, and Langtang are especially rewarding during this season, making it one of the most recommended times for Himalayan adventures.

Summer/Monsoon (June to August):

Challenges of Monsoon Trekking & Best Rain Shadow Areas

The summer season in Nepal is generally not ideal for trekking due to the monsoon, when warm, moist air brings frequent rainfall. However, it is still part of the best time to visit Himalayas Nepal for travelers seeking unique, off-the-beaten-path experiences. During this time, the landscapes transform into lush green valleys, dense forests, and flowing waterfalls, creating a completely different kind of Himalayan beauty.

The trails are usually quieter with fewer trekkers, offering a rare sense of solitude and a deeper connection with nature. This makes the best time to visit Himalayas Nepal especially appealing for those who prefer peaceful and less crowded trekking experiences. However, rainfall can make paths slippery, and lower elevations may have leeches, adding extra challenge to the journey.

Despite these conditions, this season is ideal for experienced adventurers, particularly those exploring rain-shadow regions like Upper Mustang, where the landscape stays dry, dramatic, and culturally rich even during the monsoon.

Winter (December to February):

Cold But Peaceful Trekking & Best Winter Treks

If you are not afraid of the cold, trekking in Nepal during the winter season can be a truly unique experience and is also considered part of the best time to visit Himalayas Nepal for those seeking solitude and clear mountain views. The weather remains dry and stable, but temperatures drop significantly, especially at higher altitudes, making the journey more challenging yet rewarding.

During this season, trekking trails are much less crowded compared to spring and autumn, allowing for a peaceful and more personal connection with nature. This makes the best time to visit Himalayas Nepal especially appealing for travelers seeking solitude and raw mountain beauty.

The crisp mountain air, fresh snowfall, and crystal-clear visibility create breathtaking panoramic views of the Himalayas, offering a completely different yet equally stunning trekking experience.

Winter is especially suitable for lower-altitude treks such as Poon Hill and Langtang Valley, where the routes remain accessible and the scenery is still incredibly beautiful. For well-prepared trekkers, winter offers a quiet, magical, and unforgettable Himalayan adventure.

Mount Kailash Tour Package 2026 Difficulty

The Mount Kailash tour is quite a challenging journey both physically and mentally. Due to the high altitude that keeps on varying.

Additionally, you may face hotel difficulties during this trip in some of the places on Manasarovar, Derapuk, and Zuthulpuk. The temperature difference between day and night keeps on varying from high to low, so it may be quite difficult.

During the daytime, solar radiation is strong due to certain drops in temperature. Due to this, you may be able to face certain snowfalls. We have designed our itinerary by separating a day for acclimatization in Kerung. So, there would be a low chance of facing altitude sickness.

To overcome all of the problems our team members will take care of the difficulties that you may face during your tour.

Altitude Sickness

The major problem during the Kailash tour is due to altitude sickness, as most of the places you will visit will be at 4,000-4,500 m altitude.

Most of the travelers suffer from altitude sickness as they enter Tibet. That’s the reason we have separated acclimatization day in Kerung. If you suffer from headache, dizziness, loss of appetite, and shortness of breath, these are the symptoms of altitude sickness.

To prevent altitude sickness, you should choose a program that gradually acclimatizes from time to time. The next thing is you need to stay hydrated and avoid drinking alcohol during the evening time. You need to stay warm and eat properly so that you can maintain calories and vitamins.

To get rid of altitude sickness, we provide you with Diamox from Kerung till the completion of the trip. If you feel uncomfortable, please notify our guide; he will take care of your health accordingly.

Mount Kailash Overland Tour via Kerung:

Another option is to travel to Kailash Yatra from Nepal by road and reach Kerung. After spending almost 3 to 4 days in Kathmandu for visa processing, we drive to Syabrubesi. The next day we will cross the Kerung border.

Then our next stop will lead us to the saga. From Saga, it takes a day to reach Mount Kailash. This route is cheaper than the Mount Kailash Overland Tour Via Kerung. The tour excludes the cost of Lhasa so it’s cheaper.
