Trip Overview of Kailash Yatra via Lucknow

Kailash Yatra via Lucknow allows pilgrims to complete one of the most sacred pilgrimages in just 10 days. Among all of the Kailash Mansarovar itineraries, the trip via Lucknow is also one of the easiest and quickest ways to travel.

The journey starts and ends in Lucknow (India). From Lucknow, you will drive to Nepalgunj (Nepal). It is around a 5 to 6 hours drive. Our Nepalese team will help you with border formalities.

Spend a night in Nepalgunj and get ready for scenic flights the next day. On the second day of the tour, you will fly from Nepalgunj to Simikot (2,901 m). Simikot is a remote area in the northwestern mountain range.

It is mainly traveled during adventures in Humla or Kailash Yatra via helicopter. Located at 2,901 meters above sea level, Simikot has a small airport that only welcomes STOL aircraft.

Simikot is part of the Himalayan range. Therefore, the weather is unpredictable here. Therefore, Nepalgunj – Simikot flights are often delayed or canceled. Hoping for clear weather, you will fly from Nepalgunj to Simikot on the second day of the trip.

Upon landing in Simikot, you will take a helicopter flight from Simikot to Hilsa (3,640 m). You will reach Hilsa in 20 to 30 minutes of flying. The helicopter flight will be comfortable and scenic. Hilsa is the Nepal-Tibet border area.

You will leave Nepal and enter Tibet Hilsa onwards. Our Nepalese team will help you with border formalities and ensure everything goes smoothly. On the other side, our Tibetan team will pick you up in a bus or a van as per the group size and take you to Taklakot (4,755 m).

Also known as Purang Town, Taklakot is a trading post for Nepalese and Indian mountain communities. It is located only two hours away from Mansarovar Lake (4,590 m).

Pilgrims spend two nights resting and acclimatizing here before ascending higher to Mansarovar Lake and Mt. Kailash. Taking an acclimatization break in Taklakot lowers the risk of altitude sickness further on the way.

Unlike the famous Kailash Mansarovar Overland tour, you do not have to drive for long hours multiple days to reach these destinations. Taklakot makes the Kailash Yatra easier for elderly travelers or those who cannot drive for long hours because of health issues.

Leaving Taklakot, you will drive to Mansarovar Lake. The road is well made, so the drive will be comfortable. You can see beautiful mountain views and arid Tibetan landscapes during the ride. The route offers the first glimpse of Mt. Kailash.

Likewise, you will also stop at the Rakshastal on the way. Upon reaching Mansarovar Lake, settle in the guesthouse. The remaining day is free. You can explore the lake, do Mansarovar Lake Kora, and perform puja. Buddhist pilgrims visit the Chiu Gompa.

We also recommend enjoying the night beauty of Mansarovar Lake. The next day, you will drive to Darche (4,670 m). It will be a short drive. You will have a full day to rest and prepare for the Kailash Kora (parikrama). You will then drive from Darchen to Yam Dwar.

It is a short 6 km drive from Darchen to Yam Dwar. From Ya Dwar, the trail gradually ascends to Dirapuk (5,210 m). It will be 17 km of hiking on rugged terrain. The elevation also rises with every step and ascends up to 5,210 meters on this day.

Simple guesthouse accommodation is available for pilgrims at Dirapuk, so camping is not required. The trail offers stunning views of Mt. Kailash, Arawat Peak, and Nandi Parvat. The second day of the Kailash Kora is the longest and the toughest.

You will walk 22 km on this day and ascend up to 5,630 meters (Dolma La Pass). Dolma La Pass is the closest you can climb on Mt. Kailash. Climbing above this point is prohibited. High altitude will make walking challenging from Dirapuk to Dolma La Pass.

Determination, willpower, and faith will help you complete the second day of the Kora. Insider tip: maintain your pace, take frequent short breaks, and drink plenty of water. At Dolma La Pass, you can do puja and begin descending to Zuthulphuk (4,760 m) to spend the night.

While descending, you can see striking views of Gauri Kunda and the surrounding Himalayan mountains. The last day of the Kora involves 12 km of downhill walking to Zongdui. The Kailash Kora ends here.

Our team will pick you up from Zongdui and drive you back to Taklakot via Darchen and Mansarovar Lake. It will be the same route. You’ll spend a night in Takalkot, and the next morning, drive back to Hilsa and take a helicopter flight to Simikot.

You may spend a night in Simikot and catch an early morning flight back to Nepalgunj the following day. You will drive back to Lucknow on the same day. Our Nepalese team will bid you goodbye in Lucknow, and you may proceed with further travel programs.

Helpful tips for Kailash Yatra via Lucknow

  • Our Kailash Yatra via Lucknow package doesn’t include the Nepal travel visa fee. Indian travelers do not need to get a Nepal travel visa, but proper identification cards like the Aadhar Card and Voter ID Card are required.
  • Taking a deep in the Mansarovar Lake is no longer allowed. However, respecting the beliefs of pilgrims, the Tibetan government has designated areas where pilgrims can take a bath. Ask your guide to help you bring water from the lake to perform your rituals.
  • You can hire a porter to carry your heavy bags during the three days of Kailash Kora. It will make walking easy and increase the success rate. Hiring a porter may cost you INR 350 to INR 450 per day.
  • Pilgrims who cannot walk long hours to complete the Kailash Kora can hire a horse. It will cost you around INR 2000 per day. You will get a horse and a horseman.
  • The guest house in Dirapuk and Zuthulphuk offers simple accommodation. Sharing rooms and washrooms are common. Pack everything you may need, like soap, toilet paper, moisturizer, etc.

  • We highly recommend that Indian women not wear a sari during the Kailash Kora. It will make hiking very challenging. A salwar suit will provide you with much more comfort and flexibility.
  • Vegetarian food is widely available. If you have any food allergies, inform your guide and be mindful of what you eat. Clean drinking water is also available throughout the journey.

Trip Information

What is the best time to do Kailash Yatra via Lucknow?

The best time to do Kailash Yatra via Lucknow is from May to October. November to February is winter time. The climate is very cold, and the roads are blocked due to heavy snowfall.

The weather remains stable between May and October, so the flights are on time, and there is very little chance of any obstacles due to weather. You might be wondering about rainfall between June and August.

Well, the Kailash Mansarovar area is a trans-Himalayan region. It means heavy rain does not fall here. There could be occasional light rainfall. It will not obstruct your journey but rather make it even more magical.

How difficult is Kailash Yatra via Lucknow?

The Kailash Yatra via Lucknow is not difficult travel wise. Moreover, it is one of the most comfortable ways to travel to Kailash Mansarovar. However, the three days of Kailash Kora are challenging.

The Kailash Kora distance is 53 kilometers. You will walk 17 km on the first day of the Kora, 22 km on the second day, and 12 km on the third day. The Kora is challenging because of its high altitude and rugged terrain.

Each day 6 to 7 hours of walking during the Kora is a must. So, travelers must be in good shape and ready to push themselves. Walking at high altitudes is demanding due to high air pressure and low oxygen levels.

Altitude sickness and how to avoid it

One of the things that gets under-talked during the Kailash Yatra is how high it takes the pilgrims. On this trip, you will travel 5,630 meters (18,471 ft) above sea level.

On the second of the Kailash Yatra via Lucknow, you will travel from Nepalgunj to Taklakot, which travels from 150 meters to 4,755 meters. This huge gain in elevation in a very short time increases the risks of altitude sickness.

Altitude sickness happens when your body is not used to high altitude. The huge altitude jump between Nepalgunj and Taklakot does not allow travelers ample time to acclimatize.

Therefore, we have kept an acclimatization day in our Kailash Yatra via Lucknow itinerary. Taklakot onwards, you will only ascend higher, so a rest day will make the trip easier on your body and mind.

Altitude sickness tips:

  • Listen to your body, and do not avoid any discomfort. It may be a signal that you are not adjusting to high altitude.
  • Early symptoms of altitude sickness are vomiting, nausea, dizziness, headache, difficulty in breathing, insomnia, etc. If you see these symptoms, it is important to get them under control before ascending further. Inform your guide and get his help. Our guides are trained to help pilgrims avoid altitude sickness and subside its symptoms during the trip.
  • During the Kailash Kora, walk slowly and do not rush. Take frequent breaks as your body demands. Maintain your pace and enjoy the movements.
  • Prioritize resting. It will recover your body for the next day. Eat ample food. Do not starve.
  • Drink plenty of water, soups, and ginger-honey teas throughout the trip. Keep yourself hydrated.

Travel insurance for Kailash Yatra via Lucknow

Travel insurance is recommended for Kailash Yatra via Lucknow. You can cover helicopter evacuation, trip cancellation, medical bills, etc.

As Kailash Yatra via Lucknow costs are high, it is best to insure the trip just in case it gets canceled due to unforeseen circumstances. You will not lose all your money.

Accommodation, food, and drinking water during the Kailash Yatra via Lucknow

The service in the hotels is great compared to guest houses. The rooms are spacious and come with a private washroom. The washrooms are made outside in the guesthouse, and rooms are mostly small.

Likewise, sharing rooms in guesthouses with fellow travelers is common. Services like charging, WiFi, and hot showers are easily available in hotels but may not be available in guesthouses.

Similarly, the food during the Kailash Yatra via Lucknow will be pure vegetarian meals. We provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner and unlimited water bottles throughout the trip.
