Riding tips for the Manang Mustang motorbike tour

Riding through the rugged and high-altitude climate of the Himalayas is completely different from riding on normal highways. Your body and mind face a lot of challenges and pressure.

First and foremost, previous off-road motorbiking experience is a must for the Manang Mustang motorbike tour. You literally cannot go from riding on city roads to driving on rocky, narrow mountain tracks.

The journey can get very demanding and mentally exhausting. It also increases safety risks, and you will not enjoy the journey to the fullest.

Below, we have shared tips that we have collected from our guides and previous riders:

In the Himalayas, you drive a bike slowly. Mountain roads are unpredictable, and road conditions change within minutes. You have to maintain a controlled speed. It gives you ample time to respond to shifts in road conditions and reduce the accident risks.

Avoid riding steep downhill sections while constantly using brakes because this can overheat the braking system.

On rocky or uneven terrain, standing on the foot pegs greatly improves motorcycle control. You will have better balance, improved shock absorption, reduced body fatigue, better visibility, and easier handling over rocks and potholes.

Morning riding conditions in the Himalayas are usually much better than afternoons. So, start driving early and take a full rest later in the day. Morning hours have less wind, better mountain vistas, clear skies, and more stable weather conditions.

Mountain roads in Nepal are narrow and winding. Many corners have no visibility beyond the turn. So, be careful on blind corners and be attentive. Vehicles like local buses, jeeps, and trucks can appear suddenly from the opposite direction. Therefore, defensive riding is extremely important in the Himalayas.

Apart from changing weather and climate, dust is also a big challenge on the Manang Mustang motorbike tour. So, wear riding goggles or a visor and use a neck buff or dust mask.

You have to stay hydrated at high altitude. It lowers the risk of altitude sickness. Use a hydration bag to easily drink water. Electrolyte drinks and soups are also helpful during high-altitude riding days.

High altitude effects can be different for everyone. So, do not underestimate it and be aware of its symptoms and preventive measures.

Prepare for rapid weather changes. Wear clothes in layers and always keep waterproof gear, warm layers, gloves, and dust protection gear easily accessible during rides.

You will cross a handful of landslide zones during the Manang Mustang motorbike tour. Cross the landslide sections slowly. Follow your guide’s instructions and stay alert for falling rocks.

While in the mountains, it will be common to share the tracks with yaks, horses, mules, local pedestrians, and trekkers. On the narrow roads, let the animal move first. They are unpredictable and can get triggered by an incoming motorbike. Make sure to wait on the cliffside.

We do not ride after sunset. Our goal is to reach the destination before sunset. So, we start the day early.

Take care of your food, sleep, and overall health. If you feel any discomfort or feel sick, inform your guide and get help from him. You have to be in good condition to drive a bike safely in the mountains.

Stretch during breaks, limit caffeine intake, do not consume alcohol or smoke, and use proper riding posture.

You have to be focused while driving. Do not get lost in the views, and never be overconfident.

Daily motorcycle inspection is a must. Our team will take care of it. Each morning, we check tires, brakes, chain, oil leaks, lights, suspension, fuel levels, and luggage straps. A professional mechanic travels with us to ensure bike safety and management during the Manang Mustang motorbike tour.

Trip Information

Best time to do the Manang Mustang motorbike tour

You will best enjoy the Manang Mustang motorbike tour in spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November).

These two seasons offer the clearest weather, excellent visibility, safer road conditions, comfortable riding temperature, and breathtaking mountain vistas.

As you will be riding at high altitude, following off-road mountain trails, traversing remote desert landscapes, and navigating deep valleys, weather plays a significant role in the overall experience and safety.

Manang Mustang motorbike tour in the spring season: March, April, May

For a motorbike adventure in the Himalayas, the spring season is a top choice. The climate gradually becomes warmer, the skies are mostly clear, and the Himalayan landscapes are full of life.

The road between Kathmandu, Pokhara, Besisahar, and Bandipur is in great condition in spring, and the roadside views are excellent.

Likewise, the tracks to Manang, Muktinath, and Tatopani (the lower regions of Annapurna) are lined with rhododendron blooms. Waterfalls, streams, rivers, and vegetation are thriving.

There can be some muddy and slippery tracks, but overall road conditions will be dry. The mountain views are the finest in spring. Mountains are freshly covered with snow, so they look very beautiful.

Advantages –

  • Comfortable daytime riding temperatures
  • Blooming rhododendron forests in the lower regions
  • Excellent mountain visibility
  • Longer daylight hours
  • Pleasant atmosphere in mountain villages
  • Good conditions for both off-road and highway riding

Challenges –

  • Dusty roads in Mustang and the Kali Gandaki Valley
  • Strong afternoon winds in Mustang
  • Increasing tourist traffic during the peak spring months

Manang Mustang motorbike tour in the autumn season: September, October, November

Autumn is the absolute best season for any adventure in the Himalayas, including the Manang Mustang motorbike tour. After the monsoon season, the mountains become exceptionally sharp and shining.

While motorbiking in the autumn season, you will enjoy fresh air and outstanding landscapes. Rivers, streams, and waterfalls are fuller. Forests are greener, and the mountain dust is at its lowest.

With the beginning of October, leaves begin to change their color. You will have the longest daylight hour of the year in the Himalayas in October. The climate is perfect for high-altitude adventure.

October and November are excellent times for mountain photography. The most important thing is that the mountain roads are in great condition in autumn.

As the locals begin to prepare and celebrate their biggest festivals in the autumn season, each city, town, and village will add warmth of Nepalese culture and tradition to your Manang Mustang motorbike tour adventure.

Advantages

  • Stable and dry weather
  • Crystal-clear mountain views
  • Excellent visibility for photography
  • Comfortable temperatures
  • Safer road conditions after the monsoon
  • Best overall riding experience
  • Nepalese festivals

Challenges –

  • Peak tourist season means busier tea houses and hotels
  • Dust can still be an issue on unpaved roads
  • Colder mornings and nights at high altitude in late November

Manang Mustang motorbike tour in the winter season: December, January, February

Winter adventures in the Himalayas in Nepal are seeing steady growth every year. Although there will be weather and climate challenges in winter, you will still have one of the finest Manang Mustang motorbike tour experiences in this season.

In winter, the Manang Mustang road might get covered with snow. Some mountain trails can become icy. Likewise, freezing temperatures and cold winds make riding challenging.

So, you have to be smart and prepare for the season. Winter gear, weather updates, a reliable team, and updated trail conditions are a must.

You have to be fine with winter traveling conditions. There will be some added challenges in the winter season, but you will also get to witness utterly gorgeous landscapes.

Manang Mustang motorbike tour in the summer/monsoon season: June, July, August

Summer and monsoon seasons go hand in hand. On days when there is rainfall, the weather gets extremely hot and humid. And rainy days make visibility poor and driving a motorbike on mountain tracks unsafe.

June to August is not a very good time for the Manang Mustang motorbike tour, given the high weather challenges and poor road conditions.

Landslide risks are high in the mid-hills. Some parts of the roads in the mountains may get swept away during landslides. You have to be very careful.

Monsoon season challenges –

  • Heavy rain on highways and mountain roads
  • Landslides and road blockages
  • Muddy off-road sections
  • Poor visibility
  • Slippery trails and river crossings

The most common effect of high altitude gain is altitude sickness, and it can happen to anyone regardless of their age and fitness. So, you have to follow the preventive measures and our acclimatization plan seriously.

Altitude sickness symptoms: Symptoms may begin to appear above 2,500 meters

  • Headache

  • Limit caffeine intake
  • Avoid alcohol and cigarettes
  • Pack electrolyte powder for the journey
  • Eat ample food because your body needs energy to drive on challenging mountain roads
  • Ride slowly and gain elevation steadily
  • Dress for wind and dust during riding
  • Get ample sleep daily to be in the best condition
  • Take small breaks while riding and catch a deep breath
  • If you feel discomfort, share with our guide and follow his instructions

Accommodation during the Manang Mustang motorbike tour

We provide nice tourist-standard accommodation during the Manang Mustang motorbike tour. The package includes twin shared rooms, especially in the mountains. Single rooms are available at an additional charge.

If your budget allows, we can upgrade to premium hotels and lodges.

In the cities, you will stay at the best 3-star hotels that offer modern amenities and incredible hospitality.

In the mountains, you will spend nights in lodges. Rooms will be small but cozy. We try our best to book rooms with private bathrooms. However, in some places you may have to use shared bathrooms.

Services like charging, WiFi, and hot showers may cost a few extra bucks because such infrastructure is limited in remote villages. So, carry some money for personal expenses like these.

Food and drinking water

We provide three meals a day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) during the Manang Mustang motorbike tour. The food option will be excellent even in the remote Himalayan setting.

You will enjoy the famous dal bhat and momo, as well as mountain dishes like thukpa, thenduk, Tibetan bread, and garlic soup. Similarly, fried rice, chowmein, pasta, pancakes, French fries, burgers, and pizza are also available in many places.

Food cost increases with altitude, and food options decrease with altitude.

Bakery items and different beverages such as coffee, lemon tea, ginger-honey tea, black tea, hot chocolate, etc, will also be available in most lodges.

In addition, you will also have many opportunities to try local fruits and delicacies during the Manang Mustang motorbike tour.

Travel insurance for the Manang Mustang motorbike tour

It is always a good choice to be backed with travel insurance during remote, off-road adventures in the Himalayas. You will have a safety net to rely on during an unseen situation.

Although travel insurance is not mandatory for the Manang Mustang motorbike tour, we strongly recommend it.

Your travel insurance should cover high altitude, remote mountain adventure, off-road riding, medical bills, emergency helicopter evacuation, and trip cancellation.

If you decide to get travel insurance, make sure to carry insurance documents and emergency contact details.

Communication and internet on the Manang Mustang motorbike route

You can purchase a Nepali tourist SIM in Kathmandu. The network comes and goes depending on the location. In the mountains, the mobile network is not that great.

Likewise, paid WiFi will be available in the mountain lodges. However, the speed is subject to weather conditions.

There is no ATM once you enter the mountain region. So, withdraw money for personal use in Kathmandu, Besishar, and Pokhara.

Locals in the mountains do not accept foreign currency or card payments. So, you have to carry Nepali currency.

Nepal travel visa

Our Manang Mustang motorbike tour package does not include a Nepal travel visa. Travelers have to get the visa on their own. You can obtain the Nepal travel visa from the Nepalese Embassy or Consulate Office in your country.

Alternatively, travelers from many countries can get an on-arrival visa upon landing at Tribhuvan International Airport or entering Nepal via any border.

The on-arrival travel visa is not eligible for travelers from some countries. You can check more details here.

Indian travelers do not need a travel visa to enter Nepal for the Manang Mustang motorbike tour or any travel activity.
