The Kailash Nandi Kora is also known as the Kailash Inner Kora. It is one of the greatest pilgrimage routes in the world and is considered the ultimate spiritual walk.
You may have heard about the Kailash Kora or Mansarovar Kailash Yatra. It is the outer kora of Mt. Kailash. The kora involves three days of walking from Yam Dwar to Dirapuk to Zuthulpuk via Dolma La Pass to Zongdui.
However, there is also one more Kailash Kora route, which is known as the Kailash Inner Kora or the Kailash Nandi Kora. It is much more challenging than the three-day outer Kailash Kora.
During the Kailash Nandi Kora, you will hike from Yam Dwar to Dirapuk. From here, you will cross the Kuberkunda Pass and descend to Zuthulpuk. The route to Kuberkund Pass separates from Shivasthal.
From Zuthulpuk, you will descend to Darchen and hike to Serlung Gompa, crossing Nandi Pass. Nandi Pass involves technical climbing, so you may use ropes and other climbing gear.
On the same day, you will also hike to Atma Linga and Saptarishi Cave. It will be around 34 kilometers walking in one day. Therefore, the Kailash Nandi Kora is recommended to travelers and pilgrims who are fit and strong.
Our 2025 Kailash Group
Where is Nandi Parvat Located?
Nandi Parvat is located below the celestial steps of Mt. Kailash’s south face. In the east, there are two small lakes, a Buddha statue, and a Shiva Linga temple. Likewise, Saptarishi Cave is also situated nearby.
Nandi Parvat
Nandi is the sacred carrier of Lord Shiva. As per the legends, it is believed that he lives in the form of the hill near Mt. Kailash, which is the home of Lord Shiva.
Therefore, it is called Nandi Parvat (or Parbat). If you see the peak closely, you can see the bill shape. One of the Hindu legends says that Lord Shiva meditated deeply on Mt. Kailash. So, he cannot hear the prayers of his followers.
Nandi acts as a messenger who passes all the prayers to his Lord and also protects the gates. By doing the Nandi Kora (circumambulation around Nandi Parvat), you will complete all elements of Kailash Kora.
Places you will visit during the Kailash Nandi Kora 16 days
Crossing the Kuberkunda Pass and Nandi Kora are the two main attractions of the Kailash Nandi Kora 16 days trip. However, you will also visit many religious sites, which are mentioned below:
Mansarovar Lake:Mansarovar Lake is an integral part of Kailash Kora. Devotees believe that the water of this holy lake can wash off their sins. The lake is located 4,590 meters above sea level in the far western part of Tibet’s Ngari Prefecture. The water in the lake is from the Kailash Glaciers.
Rakshas Tal: Rakshas Tal is situated near Nandi Parvat and west of Mansarovar Lake. Rakshas Tal translates to Lake of Demon. It is located 4,752 meters above sea level.
Yam Dwar: Yam Dwar is the starting point of Kailash Parikarma (Kora). It is located 6 km from Darchen. The Kailash Outer Kora begins from here. In Hindu mythology, Yam Dwar is considered the gateway to heaven. Yamaraj, the god of death, guards the entrance of Kailash Parvat.
Dirapuk: Dirapuk is one of the first night stops during the three days of Kailash Kora. It is located 5,210 meters above sea level. From Darchen, you will walk 17 km to reach Dirapuk. This place offers an incredible view of the north side of Mt. Kailash. Dirapuk Monastery is the main attraction here.
Kuberkunda Pass: You will cross Kuberkunda Pass between Dirapuk and Zuthulpuk. The pass is 5,600 meters high and offers stunning views of the east face of Mt. Kailash, along with the Nandi Hill, Asthapath, and the source of the Uma River. Crossing the Kuberkunda Pass is quite challenging. It is one of the highest points during the Kailash Inner Kora.
Zuthulpuk: Zuthulpuk is another major location during the Kailash Nandi Kora. You will descend to Zuthulpuk from Kuberkunda Pass. Here, you will explore the 13th-century Zuthulpuk monastery. The present-day monastery was rebuilt in 1983. The monastery is associated with Milarepa.
Nandi Pass: Nandi Pass is located 5,805 meters above sea level. You will cross it on the way from Darchen to Serlung Gompa. The trail is challenging, and some sections also involve technical climbing. It is the least traveled route on the Kailash trip.
Serlung Gompa (Monastery): Serlung Gompa is located near Darchen at the base of Mt. Kailash. It is one of the key sites during the Kailash Inner Kora.
Asthapath (Eight Steps): Asthapath is deeply connected to Jain. It is believed that Lord Rishabhdev, the first Tirthankara, attained Nirvana here. Jains visit Asthapath to pay homage to Lord Rishabhden and seek blessings for spiritual liberation.
Atma Linga: Atma Linga houses a divine Shiva Linga that symbolizes the eternal connection between devotees and the Supreme. The Atma Linga is considered to embody the soul of Lord Shiva, which makes it one of the most powerful sites of the entire Kailash Yatra.
Saptarishi Caves: The Saptarishi Cave is connected to the seven great Hindu sages. These sages are known as Saptarishis. They are believed to be mediated in the Saptarishi Cave. It is also believed that their divine energy still lingers in the cave, which makes Saptarishi Cave an essential stop during Kailash Yatra.
Kailash Inner Kora (Kailash Nandi Kora) vs Outer Kora: What is the difference?
We have shared the major difference between the Kailash Inner Kora and Kailash Outer Kora below:
Difficulty, duration, and distance
Kailash Inner Kora is much more challenging than the Kailash Outer Kora. The inner kora can be done in one day, but the outer kora takes three days to complete. In contrast to duration, inner kora involves technically challenging sections.
However, the outer kora is not technically advanced and suitable for all pilgrims. Similarly, the Kailash Inner Kora distance is around 34 kilometers, and the Kailash Outer Kora distance is around 53 kilometers.
No food and medical supplies centers
On the Kailash Inner Kora, there are no food or supply points/tea shops. So, you have to be well-packed with ample water, food, and first aid during the kora. Only at Selung Gompa and Gyangdrak Monastery will you find supplies to replenish yourself.
However, this is not the case for Kailash Outer Kora. On the outer kora route, there is a good arrangement of accommodation, food, and medical supplies at every resting point.
Crowd
You will see a good number of travelers and pilgrims on the Kailash Outer Kora route. The trails are bustling with devotees, and the resting points are delightful.
However, on the Kailash Inner Kora route, you are more likely to walk alone. Very few pilgrims do the inner kora. There is also no mobile signal in most parts of the route.
Unclear trails
Compared to the Kailash Outer Kora route, the Kailash Inner Kora route is not well established. Therefore, the trails are not clearly marked and require expert guidance.
Kailash Nandi Kora difficulty
Kailash Nandi Kora is challenging because it involves steep climbing and crossing complex rocky terrain. There are two phases of the Kailash Nandi Kora. First, you will hike from Darchen to Dirapuk and descend to Zuthulpuk, crossing the east face of Kuberkunda Pass.
The trail separates from Shivasthal and continues to Kuberkunda Pass, instead of the Dolma La Pass. You will use climbing ropes and other equipment as per the trail conditions. From the pass, you will descend to Zuthupuk and then to Darchen.
Now begins the second part of the Kailash Nandi Kora. You will hike from Darchen to Serlung Gompa. From here, you will explore Ashthpad and follow a steep, rocky terrain to Atma Linga and Saptarishi Cave, crossing Nandi Pass on the way.
Then, descend back to Darchen, completing the Nandi Kora. Just before reaching Saptarisihi cave, you will walk past the 13 Golden Chortens situated in the narrow fissure on the south face of Mt. Kailash. This section is quite scary and difficult to navigate. You have to be extremely careful.
Is Kailash Nandi Kora suitable for you?
You need more than spiritual dedication for Kailash Nandi Kora. Anyone thinking of doing the Kailash Nandi Kora must be physically fit. Likewise, having a previous trekking or high-altitude experience is also recommended.
Even if you do not have the previous trekking or high-altitude experience, it is fine. Our guides will help you complete the Kailash Nandi Kora safely. However, you cannot compromise on your fitness.
The high altitude and walking during the Kailash Nandi Kora is no joke. It will test your limits. You have to push yourself. Similarly, if you have diabetes, asthma, arthritis, or a heart or lung problem, we strongly suggest you consult your doctor regarding the trip and get his opinion.
We, Leaf Holidays Treks and Expedition, have helped many devotees with several health issues complete the Kailash inner and outer kora. However, we need your honesty and full preparation for a safe and successful trip.
Best time of the year to do the Kailash Nandi Kora
Usually, the Kailash Kora is open between May and October, as it is the most optimal time of the year for this trip weather-wise. We hope you understand that the Kailash Nandi Kora is a high-altitude journey in the Himalayas.
So, the climate is going to be cold year-round. However, between May and October, the temperature is bearable. Therefore, traveling becomes safe and possible in these months.
The temperature ranges between -7°C and -28°C. The evenings and mornings are colder. The sun’s warmth during the daytime makes the journey pleasant.
From November to April, the Kailash trips are generally closed. The weather is not good, snow blocks the roads, and the temperature drops way below the freezing point.
If you want to do the Kailash Nandi Kora during a festival, then consider the Saga Dawa Festival. It happens in May/June. Thousands of locals from all around Tibet and Tibetan Buddhism followers flock to Kailash and Mansarovar to celebrate this vibrant festival.
Note that even during the best time, the weather and climate remain unpredictable in the Himalayas. There could be sudden snowfall, rain, or a storm. So, we recommend that travelers pack all types of clothes and essentials.

Kailash Nandi Kora is a high-altitude journey. So, altitude sickness is one of the common concerns on this trip. As the Kailash Nandi Kora is mostly taken as a holy pilgrimage, many devotees overlook altitude sickness.
In general, they are not aware of how high they will go on the Kailash Nandi Kora and the effects of high altitude. So, many pilgrims do get sick or suffer from altitude sickness.
Well, Leaf Holidays Treks & Expedition, you do not have to worry about altitude sickness because our team will take care of you. We have designed our Kailash Nandi Kora itinerary to provide you with the best acclimatization opportunity.
Likewise, our crew will monitor your health and provide altitude sickness medicine if needed. We highly recommend travelers consult their doctor regarding high altitude and altitude sickness if they have any medical conditions.
Below, we have shared some early symptoms and preventive measures of altitude sickness that you should know:
Altitude sickness symptoms: Headache, feeling uneasy, vomiting, nausea, dizziness, loss of appetite, problem in breathing, sleeplessness, etc.
Altitude sickness preventive measures:
Drink plenty of water, ginger-honey tea, soups, etc, daily.
Do not drink alcohol or smoke during the tour. Dehydration is not good during an altitude journey. It increases the risks of altitude sickness.
Rest and have a balanced diet.
Do not ascend quickly.
Maintain a steady pace when you are walking high.
Listen to your body and inform your guide if you feel any discomfort.
Accommodation during the Kailash Nandi Kora
You will stay overnight in a three-star hotel in Kathmandu. It will be a very nice hotel with spacious rooms and en-suite washrooms. You will have access to free WiFi, AC, TV, etc.
During the Kailash Nandi Kora, you will spend only two nights in a basic guesthouse at Mansarovar and Dirapuk. In all other places, you will spend nights in simple but very clean and comfortable hotels.
In a guesthouse, the washrooms are usually made out of the building and shared between the travelers. Hotels have private washrooms. We book twin-shared rooms. Single rooms are also available but cost extra money.
During the tour, you will find free WiFi, charging, and a hot shower facility in many places. But we recommend carrying some money (preferably Chinese Yuan) just in case you have to pay a few bucks for these services.
Food and water
We provide pure vegetarian food during the Kailash Nandi Kora. You will get three meals a day during the trip. Each day you will get breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You can buy additional food and drinks on your own as well.
On your arrival day in Kathmandu, we only provide a welcome dinner. Likewise, on your departure day, you will only get breakfast. For the rest of the trip, you will get three meals a day.
In Kathmandu, you will have a variety of vegetarian meal options. Cafes and restaurants usually have multi-cuisines with excellent vegetarian food options. In Tibet, you will have a combination of Tibetan, Indian, Chinese, and Continental food.
We highly recommend travelers to be flexible with food and try local delicacies as much as they can. It will make the journey more meaningful and special. We also provide unlimited water bottles throughout the Kailash Nandi Kora. So, you do not have to worry about drinking water.
Transporation
The Kailash Nandi Kora is an overland tour from Kathmandu, Nepal. Therefore, the major transportation used during the tour will be cars and buses, as per the group size.
Our Kailash Nandi Kora package does not include traveling to/from Kathmandu. So, travelers have to take care of international flights or whatever means they choose to travel in and out of Kathmandu.
During the tour, we will provide complimentary airport pick-up and drop-off (as per the Kailash Nandi Kora itinerary). Likewise, we will provide a comfortable private four-wheeler as per the group size to travel between Kathmandu and Mansarovar Lake.
Likewise, in Kathmandu, we will also provide a private vehicle during your Chinese Embassy visit for a visa and guided sightseeing tour.
Travel insurance
Travel insurance is not mandatory for Kailash Nandi Kora. However, as the Kailash Nandi Kora is much more challenging than the Kailash Outer Kora, we recommend all participants to buy travel insurance covering helicopter evacuation and medical bills.
The Kailash Nandi Kora is also an expensive trip, so you may cover trip cancellation in your travel insurance. Similarly, loss/theft of personal belongings is another coverage you can consider to include in your travel insurance for Kailash Nandi Kora.
It is best to buy travel insurance in your country rather than buying it in Kathmandu because the options are not that great.

Another major difference is that during the Kailash Nandi Kora, you will cross the Kuberkund Pass instead of the Dolma La Pass, which is crossed on the regular Kailash Kora.
Why is the Nandi Kora considered more sacred and spiritually significant?
The Nandi Kora is also known as the Inner Kora. It takes pilgrims to the heart of Mount Kailash and explores revered sanctums such as Serlung Gompa, Atma Linga, Ashtapad, Nandi Parvat, and the Saptarishi Cave.
These places are believed to be the dwelling places of Lord Shiva and Nandi. According to Hindu and Buddhist traditions, completing one Nandi Kora is considered equivalent to completing 13 Kailash Outer Koras.
How difficult is the Nandi Kora compared to the standard Kailash Kora?
Compared to the standard Kailash Kora, the Kailash Nandi Kora is much more physically challenging because of the complex terrain.

Overall, the physical and mental demands are quite high on the Kailash Nandi Kora, which makes it more challenging than the standard Kailash Kora.
How long does it take to complete the Kailash Nandi Kora?
The Kailash Nandi Kora usually takes 17 to 18 days to complete. Our itinerary is 17 days long. It includes the Chinese visa processing time in Kathmandu and also has a strategic altitude gain planning to reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
What physical fitness level is required for the Kailash Nandi Kora?
The Kailash Nandi Kora is not a multi-day Kora. But it involves three days of intense walking across rugged, steep terrain at high altitude.
Therefore, travelers must be in good shape and have strong determination to complete the journey. In short, you’ll need decent strength, stamina, and endurance.
Do I need prior high-altitude or trekking experience?
During the Kora, you will ascend above 5,000 meters from sea level. Although prior high-altitude or trekking experience is not necessary for the Kailash Nandi Kora, it is best to have one.
What is the best time of year to do the Kailash Nandi Kora?
May to October are the best times of the year to do the Kailash Nandi Kora. Due to unfavorable weather and road blockage in other months, the Kailash Kora route remains closed.

A most successful pilgrimage support by a most excellent team at Leaf Holidays!
My friend and I have successfully completed the guided Mt Kailash and Manasarover pilgrimage with the help of Managing Director Gopal Thapa, of Leaf Holidays, in September 2024. I can personally vouch for their thorough support throughout from the moment we started communications to clarify details of the tour, to ensure we booked it with confidence, to when we arrived and departed - they have an excellent and experienced network of guides, porters and chefs. I felt totally looked after and cared for throughout. Gopal was on hand every step of the way to support everyone's particular requirements. Most of all he did all this while staying cheerful, patient and amicable all the time! The chefs did an excellent job cooking fresh breakfast, lunch and dinner at every location. Incredible support was provided during the Lake Manasrover prayers and also during the Mt Kailash circumambulation by both Gopal and Kusum. Absolutely loved the cultural night treat a day before our departure with the added bonus of celebrating Gopal's brithday! Bravo indeed Leaf Holidays team - many thanks, keep it up and God bless!

Dream Darshan of Kailash Maansarovar
Going to Kailash Maansarovar was a life long dream and just when I thought it may never happen I got the divine call from Jayshree our tour operator to pack my bags and get ready. The Yatra was very well organized with ZERO planning n stress for me.The flights, the accommodation, food and transport were awesome. The people who really looked after us day and night and very warmly deserve a mention here. Gopal Thapa for Visa's and accommodation in Nepal. He gave us a very warm welcome at the airport too :) We were taken to Pashupatinath temple and also our Mountain flight to Everest and other Himalayan ranges was well organized.Gokaran who was our 24 hrs shadow and helped us with every little thing on the 11 day drive and trek to Kailash and Maansarovar. He made us laugh so much with his jokes and he is such a good singer. He was also the life saver with oxygen cylinder for me as I had low O2 a few times at high altitude. He made the whole trip seem so easy though it's one of the most difficult Darshans that one can do.Gokul and Nakul and the good chef who kept feeding us 3 times a day with warm breakfast, lunch and dinner. Very nice and genuine guys and so hardworking.I would recommend Leaf Holidays to anyone and everyone as there is a homely feeling with them and most of us literally had tears at the end of the trip. Like we wanted to come home but also we were leaving these lovely souls behind to help with other Yatris. I think I will always keep in touch with them as for me now they are family :)

Unforgettable Kailash Manasarover - June 2024
Breath-taking views and amazing location! What an experience... Leaf Holidays took care of us very well... We landed at midnight and Gopal was there at the airport to receive us, right from there till we were dropped back at the airport, Leaf Holidays staff were there to take care of us and ensured that we enjoy each day of our trip. Even while waiting for our group visa to arrive, they took us around Nepal each day to a different location accompanied by their staff and arranged cab services. All hotel stays were superb, especially in Tibet. Food was delicious, freshly cooked warm food for every meal with a balanced veg diet, unlimited supply of mineral water bottles, hot chai and hot water always, even for bathing at Manasarover:) Above all, the staff - Gopal and his brothers were caring, took care of every detail right from picking up our luggages to loading and unloading each day, carrying our personal bags, making sure they walk with us at every step, checking for our health each day and what not... the boys were simply great that gave us a "warm" experience and a memorable one!!!

The holiest pilgrimages
Om NamashivayaI recently completed Mount Kailash, Manasarovar yatra with Leaf Holidays Treks & Expedition. It was dream come true. I will cherish each and every moment of my yatra for the rest of my life.It is a tough pilgrimage. It was well planned and executed by Gopal and his staff. Right from paperwork, hotel accommodations to everyday meal plan everything is carefully planned. I got support, guidance and help whenever needed. Regular health check is done for the entire group. Staff gave excellent care to those whose oxygen level dropped. Totally impressed with their services. I would like to appreciate Jayshree Patel’s services. She is my contact person in Canada for Kailash Manasarovar yatra. She gave timely guidance and positive confidence to prepare for the yatra. She is humble and down to earth which makes it easy to communicate with her freely. Thank you Gopal, his staff and Jayshree for all the support to fulfill my childhood dream.

The Par Excelent Services - Best of the Best People
At the time when we wanted to visit Nepal, we were looking for a tour guide in Nepal. we came across Leaf Holidays and were a bit skeptical about it. We landed in Kathmandu on the 29th of April afternoon, to our surprise, the team of Mr. Gopal Thapa and Tek Prasad were waiting for us at the airport with garlands and a big Van and smiling faces. Now we were sure to have the best time with this team. They had arranged our stay in the best hotels with superfood. During the entire trip of 10 days, they give us the best services. Due to air pollution, our flights were canceled for Pokhran, and without a second thought, they decided to drive us for about 8 hours to Pokhara in the Van. The roads were terrible, but we enjoyed the bumpy ride with good food on the way. The same cancelation happened on our return and they joyfully road-ridden with the team for about 12 hours to Nagarkot from Pokhran. They showed us the most beautiful places and temples to worship. This trip became our Pilgrim trip. Gopalji and Prasadji took us to the best places for shopping and managed to get us real bargains. They ensured we do not spend more than what is worth paying for.At the end of our trip, they dropped us at the airport and it was difficult to say Good Buy, but we said: "will come again". I want to say here, that if anyone is looking to visit Nepal, and wants to enjoy a true hospitality experience, you must use their services.
