Trip Overview of Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour

Is trekking to Everest Base Camp not a viable option for you? Do not worry. Join our EBC helicopter tour and witness the beauty of the tallest mountain in the world comfortably. The Everest Base Camp helicopter tour is a popular one-day Himalayan adventure that literally takes you to Mt. Everest in the blink of an eye.

The Everest Base Camp helicopter tour is a short trip from Kathmandu to Mount Everest. The trip includes flying from Kathmandu to Lukla, where we refuel the chopper, so you get 15 minutes of landing experience.

From Lukla, you will fly to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar. You will land at Kala Patthar for around five minutes.  After that, fly to Hotel Everest View (above Namche Bazaar). Here you land for breakfast.

You will have a 30-minute landing duration at Hotel Everest View. Then return to Kathmandu after breakfast. Overall, you can complete the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour in less than five hours.

As you fly beyond Lukla, you will follow the trekking trails that lead to EBC. Explore the beauty of the Everest region from the sky. Witness beautiful Sherpa villages, lush valleys, and suspension bridges.

During the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour, you can see aerial views of the famous villages like Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, and Dingboche.

Likewise, the EBC helicopter tour will present stunning mountain and glacier panoramas. The flight will be comfortable. Five passengers fly at a time, and each of them gets a full window seat to enjoy the views.

The Everest Base Camp helicopter tour is a shared flight. Therefore, you will be traveling with other passengers. We can also arrange a private Everest Base Camp helicopter tour, but it will cost more because you are chartering the entire helicopter.

Duration of the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour and landing points

The Everest Base Camp helicopter tour is 4 to 5 hours long. Most flights are operated between 5:30 AM and 9:00 AM and end by 1:00 PM.

During the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour, you will land in Lukla, Kala Patthar, and Syangboche Airstrip (near Hotel Everest View).

You land in Lukla for 15 minutes to refuel the chopper. During the landing period in Lukla, you will stay within the airport vicinity and board as soon as refueling is done. It will be a short yet great experience.

Then you fly to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar. We do not land at Everest Base Camp but landing at Kala Patthar is possible. Kala Patthar is situated at 5,545 meters above sea level.

*We do not advise to be here more than 5 minutes because altitude sickness risk increases. Likewise, the pilot cannot turn off the engine while landing at Kala Patthar, so we have to hurry.

After Kala Patthar landing, you’ll return to Syangboche Airstrip. It is located just above Namche Bazaar. Here you land and walk to Hotel Everest View for breakfast. You have half an hour to enjoy breakfast.

*Landing at Kala Patthar is an integral part of the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour. But in 2025, the Kala Patthar landing got banned because of environmental concerns. At the moment (2026), the authorities are allowing landing at Kala Patthar but it is subject to change.

Why is the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour a must-do activity in Nepal?

If you are visiting Nepal and not particularly interested in trekking, but would love to see Mt. Everest or explore the Everest region, the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour is a great program for you.

The Everest Base Camp helicopter tour includes short landings at Lukla and Hotel Everest View, with potential landing at Kala Patthar (if authorities allow).

So, you are not only enjoying an incredible flight over the eastern Himalayan range in Nepal but also get to touch the land and experience being at high altitude.

In addition to that, the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour is luxurious, time-efficient, and comfortable. Below, we have shared why the EBC heli tour is a must-do activity for tourists in Nepal:

The easiest and quickest way to get close to Mount Everest:

It may sound too good to be true, but helicopter flight allows you to travel to Mount Everest easily and comfortably. Not only can you complete this tour in just 4 to 5 hours.

If you have your morning free in Kathmandu, consider doing the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour. The tour starts at around 6:00 AM – 7:00 AM, and you will be back in the city before 12:00 PM.

A great alternative to the Everest Base Camp trek:

The traditional trek to Everest Base Camp is challenging and time-consuming. The helicopter tour makes EBC accessible to travelers who are not physically able to trek there, have poor health, or are bound by a short holiday.

Imagine flying over deep valleys, glacial rivers, picturesque mountain villages, and towering mountains in just the blink of an eye. The journey will be both adventurous and memorable.

Short holiday:

Not every traveler can spend two weeks trekking in the Himalayas to see Mt. Everest. We cater to many tourists who visit Nepal for a 4-5 days holiday or even shorter periods, wishing to see Mt. Everest with their own eyes.

The Everest Base Camp helicopter tour makes the Everest region accessible to travelers who are bound by time. It is also great for photographers who wish to capture Everest and return to Kathmandu the same day.

An excellent activity to spend your free morning in Kathmandu:

If you are in Kathmandu and have a free morning, we recommend the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour. It could be the best highlight of your trip to Nepal.

Spend the morning hours enjoying the breathtaking beauty of the Everest region and explore heritage sites in the mid-afternoon.

No trekking required:

The Everest Base Camp helicopter tour eliminates the need for long walks, making the journey more accessible for travelers of all ages. You do not have to trek 130 km. The helicopter tour to EBC only involves light walking from Syangboche Airstrip to Hotel Everest View.

Families with kids, elderly travelers, or tourists looking for a relaxing adventure in the Himalayas will find the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour perfect for them.

Touch down at different places:

You will land at Lukla and Hotel Everest View during the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour. Kala Patthar landing is not guaranteed at the moment.

Your first landing will be at Lukla after leaving Kathmandu. We land here to refuel the chopper. You get around 15 minutes to stretch and look around.

Then, you will land at Kala Patthar for 5 minutes. Finally, while returning from Kala Patthar, you land at Syangboche Airstrip (near Hotel Everest View). Here you will have around half an hour to have breakfast.

Witness unbelievable mountain vistas and landscapes:

One of the best things about helicopter flights is the views you get to see.

During the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour, you will see unparalleled panoramic views of the eastern Himalayan range.

It includes mountains such as Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Thamserku, Ama Dablam, Cho Oyu, Pumori, Chamlang, Baruntse, Island Peak, etc. Along with that, you will also enjoy spectacular views of valleys and glaciers.

See the magnificent aerial view of the Khumbu Glacier and Khumbu Icefall:

Helicopter flight is the only way to see the true grandeur of the Khumbu Glacier and Khumbu Icefall. The Khumbu Glacier is a massive river of ice flowing down from Mt. Everest.

Likewise, Khumbu Icefall is just above Everest Base Camp. It is a giant block of ice that constantly shifts and collapses. One of the first technical challenges mountaineers face during the Everest expedition is crossing the treacherous Khumbu Icefall.

From the helicopter, you can clearly see the maze of ice towers, crevasses, and glaciers that form the Khumbu Icefall.

Breakfast experience at Hotel Everest View

Hotel Everest View is one of the first luxury lodges in the Himalayas in Nepal. It is also one of the highest luxury hotels in the world and holds a Guinness World Record for this very fact.

Situated at 3,962 meters (13,000 ft) above sea level, Hotel Everest View offers premium accommodation and fine dining for the trekkers. The property only has 12 rooms, and Mt. Everest is visible from all of its rooms.

You can have breakfast on the balcony, relishing the distant but tempting view of Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Ama Dablam, and Mt. Nuptse. The breakfast menu includes both Nepali and continental options.

With that, you can get freshly brewed coffee, a variety of teas, and other beverages. For special occasions, we can also arrange wine and champagne (additional charge applies).

*Note that breakfast expenses are not covered in our Everest Base Camp helicopter tour cost. So, you can have food as per your choice and budget.

Is the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour suitable for you?

The Everest Base Camp helicopter tour is for everyone. If you are fine with flying in a helicopter, you do not have to worry about anything.

The flight will be comfortable, so if you want to experience the Himalayas without the challenges of trekking, the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour is perfect for you.

➡ If you have ever dreamed of seeing the tallest mountain in the world closely, the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour is a suitable package for you.

➡ If you do not want to trek but wish to see the Everest region’s beauty with your own eyes.

➡ You cannot trek because of your physical disability or health issues.

➡ You have only one day in Kathmandu.

➡ You prefer comfort, exclusivity, and a premium Everest experience.

➡ You want to experience Mount Everest with your kids, but do not necessarily want to trek.

➡ If you are visiting Nepal for the first time and are not sure about trekking, but would love to travel to the Himalayas.

➡ You are a couple and looking to have a special, romantic experience.

➡ You wish to celebrate a special occasion with your loved ones.

Altitude acknowledgement and safety rules during the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour with landing

We guarantee a safe helicopter flight to Everest Base Camp. However, since the flight reached high altitude locations like Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar, travelers have to understand and follow some basic but important guidelines.

Quick high altitude gain:

While flying from Kathmandu to Everest Base Camp, you will experience rapid altitude gain. In the blink of an eye, you will travel from 1,440 meters to 5,500 meters.

As the tour includes landing at Lukla, Kala Patthar, and Hotel Everest View, some travelers may feel a little discomfort, but the risk of altitude sickness is low because we return to Kathmandu quickly.

Helicopter flight rules:

Travelers have to strictly follow the strict aviation safety rules set by Nepal’s civil aviation authorities during the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour with landing.

Passengers have to follow the following rules:

  • Pay attention to the safety briefing before the flight commences
  • Follow the pilot’s instructions at all times
  • Remain seated with seat belts fastened during the flight
  • Do not move or exchange once in the air
  • Do not smoke inside the helicopter
  • Do not throw anything out of the helicopter
  • During landing, only the helicopter exists on your pilot’s instructions
  • Approach the helicopter only when you get a signal from the authorities, and do not approach the helicopter from behind
  • Be mindful of strong winds created by rotor blades

Everest Base Camp helicopter tour weight:

To fly to Everest Base Camp, we have to maintain a 450-500 kg weight limit (for 5 passengers). It is to ensure the helicopter maintains optimal performance while flying in the thin air of the Himalayas.

If the total weight of the passengers exceeds the 500 kg mark, we divide the group into two helicopters. Travelers have to pay for the extra helicopter charges.

In some cases, we also put the passenger into another group with a low weight. If landing gets allowed at Kala Patthar, the weight limit per helicopter drops to roughly 250 kg.

➡ Maximum passengers on each flight: 5 + 1 pilot

➡ Total helicopter weight limit: 450 to 500 kg (passengers + luggage)

➡ Kala Patthar landing limit: Around 250 kg (2 to 3 passengers fly at a time)

Unpredictable weather:

The weather in the Himalayas can change sooner than you may imagine, and the mountain flights are definitely highly affected. The good news is that spring and autumn have much better weather windows for helicopter flights.

The morning hours are usually calm and stable weather-wise. So, most of our Everest Base Camp helicopter tours are organized in the morning. If the weather remains fine, we also organize an EBC tour in the afternoon.

*Note that the flight may get delayed or rescheduled due to strong winds, fog, or clouds.

*Precaution is our priority during the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour to ensure your safety. So, we take even the slightest shift in the weather very seriously.

Dressing up for the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour:

The Everest region is colder, especially when you go above 3,000 meters. Travelers should dress in layers for the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour. Wear a comfortable base layer and a warm jacket. Carry gloves, a hat, and a scarf.

*Avoid wearing clothes that can make you uncomfortable, like skirts or big, flowy clothes.

*Similarly, wear comfortable shoes and sunglasses (preferably with UV protection).

*Check out our Everest Base Camp helicopter tour packing list below to see what to pack in your backpack for the journey.

Best time to do the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour

The Everest Base Camp helicopter tour with landing is available throughout the year with Leaf Holidays Treks and Expedition. However, for the finest experience, you need stable weather and perfect visibility, which is mainly seen in the spring and autumn seasons

Each season in Nepal offers a slightly different Everest Base Camp helicopter tour experience. We have shared the flight experience in all four seasons below:

Spring (March to May):

Spring is one of the best seasons for the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour with landing. The weather in the Himalayas generally remains stable, and visibility is great for excellent mountain vistas during the helicopter flights.

The temperature is moderate. Likewise, spring blooms make the landscapes colorful and stunning. The lower part of the Everest region is filled with blooming rhododendron and magnolia in spring.

Likewise, you can see many travelers all over the region during the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour in spring. Mountain views are crystal clear, and flights are mostly on schedule.

Summer/monsoon (June to August):

Summer and monsoon coincide with each other in Nepal. It makes the weather quite unstable in these months. June is quite hot, and the skies are covered with dense clouds.

However, mornings are mostly stable for helicopter flights in the Himalayas. July begins the monsoon season. Rainfall occurs frequently, so the flights in general are highly affected throughout the country.

Everest Base Camp helicopter tour with landing is possible between June and August, but it also highly depends on your weather luck.

Autumn (September to November):

The autumn season is the second-best time of the year for the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour with landing. This season also offers stable weather and climate.

This post-monsoon period also offers excellent visibility as the monsoon rains clear the dust and pollution, making the skies crisp and clear.

You will witness breathtaking mountain vistas and landscapes during the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour in autumn. It is a great time to capture the beauty of the Everest region for photographers.

Winter (December to February):

Winter has unstable weather. So, it is considered an off-time for adventures in the Himalayas. The climate gets very cold in winter, and gloomy skies obstruct the mountain vistas.

However, not every day is like this. If you do not mind cold temperatures, you can experience the peaceful, unhinged side of the Himalayas in winter.

In winter, the Everest Base Camp helicopter flights may get frequently delayed, so it is best to plan 1-2 contingency days.

In winter, the mountains appear even more dramatic and magical. Once snow begins to fall, you cannot even fathom the beauty of the Everest region.

Everest Base Camp helicopter tour vs Everest Base Camp trek, which is better?

The Everest Base Camp trek is a traditional way of traveling to the base of the tallest mountain in the world. It is a two-week trip that involves daily 6 hours of walking on average and night stays in different Sherpa villages.

On the other hand, the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour is a quick and easy way to travel to EBC and can be done in 4 to 5 hours. Unlike trekking, you do get to stand at Everest Base Camp during the helicopter tour. However, you will discover the magnificent aerial panoramas, which are not possible for trekkers.

Both the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour and the Everest Base Camp trek are excellent adventure programs to witness the grandeur of Mount Everest. Depending on your time, fitness, budget, and interests, you can pick the one that best suits you.
