Summer/monsoon (May to August)

Summer is the most optimal time of the year for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. Mt. Kailash and Mansarovar Lake are located in the rain shadow area of the Himalayas.

So, these places do not see heavy rainfall, and the occasional rainfall clears the air and makes the views enchanting.

Likewise, the weather is stable and pleasant in Tibet during the summer/monsoon season. However, in Kathmandu, you will experience rainfall and a hot climate when it’s not raining.

Around Kailash Mansarovar, the temperature ranges between 5°C to 30°C. Because of stable weather between May and August, Kailash Kora is also safe and possible.

Autumn (September to October)

Autumn is another great time of the year to travel to Kailash Mansarovar. September and October are the best times of the year to do Kailash Kora.

In September and October, you will see many travelers on the Kailash Mansarovar route. The mountain views are clear, and the atmosphere is divine and refreshing.

The area begins to get less crowded as most devotees leave the region by the end of September and the start of October.

Winter (November to April)

The Kailash Mansarovar region experiences a long winter. From November to April, the Kailash Mansarovar area goes through freezing winter conditions.

The temperature falls below -15°C, and the region is heavily covered by snow. Snow storms and strong winds are common. Likewise, the paths are slippery.

As Kailash Mansarovar is situated at a high altitude, the risk of altitude sickness drastically increases due to extreme cold.

Most of the hotels, supply stations, and shops shut down in the winter season. Likewise, medical support also becomes challenging.

Therefore, the Tibetan government themselves closes the region to travel.

Trip Information

Altitude sickness during the Kailash Mansarovar trip and how to prevent it

Travelers may suffer from altitude sickness while traveling to Kailash Mansarovar because of the high altitude. Most people traveling to Kailash Mansarovar are not used to high altitudes and unaware of the challenges and risks.

Therefore, high altitude awareness is a must. Oxygen levels at high altitudes are lower than the sea level from where most travelers come from. Likewise, the air pressure is also high.

Our body is not used to this kind of environment, so it may react if it is not acclimated on time. The reactions are headache, nausea, vomiting, insomnia, difficulty in breathing, loss of appetite, dizziness, etc.

These are the early symptoms of altitude sickness and can happen to travelers of any age/fitness. The only way to avoid altitude sickness is acclimatization and ascending slowly.

Our Kailash Mansarovar tour via Lhasa/Kerung includes an acclimatization day in Lhasa. You will have the opportunity to rest and get used to 3,650 m (Lhasa) before traveling higher.

Some tips for acclimating and avoiding altitude sickness are mentioned below. Please follow them, and we request that you do not underestimate the effects of high altitudes.

  • Upon landing in Lhasa, take it easy and rest. Have warm soups and ginger-honey teas.
  • Throughout the trip, drink plenty of water.
  • Avoid alcohol and smoke until you complete the Kora. A dehydrated body is more prone to altitude sickness.
  • Listen to your body, and if you feel discomfort, inform your guide. It is important to address any discomfort on time to avoid the progress of the symptoms.
  • During the Kora, hike slowly and maintain your pace.
