For both adventure lovers and Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, and Bon pilgrims, the Kailash Mansarovar overland tour is a lifetime trip. Traveling here is nothing less than a privilege, given the high expense and completed permit process.

The journey combines faith, adventure, and heavenly energy. All the legends and myths associated with Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake make this voyage even more intriguing. It is a comfortable tour, so anyone can join us.

Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake’s religious significance

Mount Kailash is a holy mountain for Hindus, Jain, Buddhists, and followers of Bon religions. Hindus believe Mount Kailash is the home of Lord Shiva and his wife, Goddess Parvati.

Visiting here is a lifetime pilgrimage for Hindus. They believe the Kailash Kora and taking a deep in Mansarovar Lake will get rid of their sins and attend liberation (Moksha).

Likewise, Buddhists believe Mount Kailash is connected to their cosmic axis, and the mountain is home to their deity Chakrasamvara (Demchok). And for Jains, their saint Rishabhadeva attained liberation on Mount Kailash.

Most of the pilgrims go on three days of Kailash Kora. However, some also aim to do 108 Koras. Pilgrims who follow the Bon religion do the Kora in an anti-clockwise direction and rest in a clockwise direction.

What are the Inner Kora and the Outer Kora of Mount Kailash?

There are two Kailash Koras- Inner Kora and Other Kora. You may or may not have heard about it. The Inner Kailash Kora is shorter but also more challenging than the Outer Kailash Kora. The Inner Kora involves technical sections and glacier crossing.

You also have to get special permission from the Tibetan government and an expert guide to the Inner Kails Kora. Likewise, the Outer Kora is the regular three days of Kora that we will do on this trip.

  • Inner Kora: You will explore sites like Nandi Parvat, Kailash Charan Sparsh, and the Ashtapad.
  • Outer Kora: You will explore sites like Dira-Puk, Dolma La Pass, and ZuthulPhuk.

What is it like doing the Kailash Mansarovar overland tour from Kathmandu?

The Kailash Mansarovar overland tour from Kathmandu is a comfortable trip and less complicated when it comes to obtaining permits. It is a 16-day adventurous trip across the high Tibetan plateau. The tour will let you experience rich Nepali and Tibetan cultural heritage to some extent.

Many people also call this trip Kailash Mansarovar Yatra or Kailash Yatra, so please do not get confused. You will arrive in Kathmandu and spend four nights here before traveling to Tibet.

During your time in Kathmandu, you will wait to receive the Chinese travel visa. After we obtain all the necessary permits, we will leave Kathmandu and start the journey toward Manasarovar Lake.

From Kathmandu, you will reach Mansarovar in five days, including acclimatization day in Kerung. The Kailash Parikrama (Kora) starts from Darchen and ends in Zongdui.

After the Kailash Parikrama, you will follow the same route and drive back to Kathmandu. If you are interested in exploring more Tibetan cities like Shigtase, Gyantse, and Lhasa, let us know ahead of time.

Who can do the Kailash Mansarovar overland tour from Kathmandu? Are you fit for this trip?

The Kailash Mansarovar overland tour from Kathmandu is good for all ages of travelers. If you have the willpower and faith to complete the Kailash Kora, you can join this tour without any issues.

We organize the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra for both adults and senior citizens. We have seen even the not fittest people completing the Kailash Parikrama. It all starts in your mind and how much you can push yourself.

Nevertheless, a fit traveler will definitely enjoy the journey the most. So, if you have time, please include light workout and regular long walking in your day to day. Be consistent for 2 to 4 months, and you will reach a decent fitness point for the Kailash tour.

*Note: Underage travelers (below 18 years old) must be accompanied by their parents or an identified guardian.

Kailash Kora difficulty

The most challenging part of the Kailash Mansarovar overland tour is the Kailash Kora. It is three days of extensive walking at a high altitude that covers approximately 53 kilometers.

The hiking trail is well established but gets steeper as you get close to Dolma La Pass (5,670 m). Dolma La Pass is the highest point you will reach during the Kora. It is also the closest point you can reach to Mount Kailash.

The final ascent to the pass involves hiking on steep, rocky slopes. The Kora will test your endurance and patience. During the rest of the tour, you will travel in a comfortable four-wheeler.

Travelers who have motion sickness may find long drives uncomfortable, so we recommend having motion sickness medicine. Overall, we rate the Kailash Kora difficulty 6.5 out of 10.

Altitude sickness during the Kailash Mansarovar overland tour

The Kailash Mansarovar overland tour starts in Kathmandu, located 1,400 meters above sea level. From here, you will drive to Timure (1,760 m) and continue to Kerung (2,900 m).

We have an acclimatization day at Kerung, so you will have a good chance to avoid altitude sickness further during the journey.

These initial three days of gradual ascent after leaving Kathmandu are crucial to acclimatize before you go above 4,500 meters. Therefore, take your time to acclimate and get used to the high-altitude climate and environment.

Beyond Saga, you will reach 5,670 m (Dolma La Pass) in just four days of walking. Our guide will monitor your health and blood sugar level. It will help us identify altitude sickness promptly.

If you see symptoms like vomiting, nausea, dizziness, insomnia, headache, difficulty breathing, and loss of appetite, you must inform your guide immediately and receive first aid.

Your physical health determines the success of your Kailash Kora, so you have to be in your best condition. Recognizing early symptoms of altitude sickness or any discomfort and treating it is very important.

We have designed our Kailash Mansarovar overland tour itinerary to provide our guests with ample acclimatization opportunities.

Still, we never know how our body will react to high altitude, so we have to be proactive.

Below, we have shared some tips to avoid altitude sickness:

  • Hydration: Drink lots of water, warm soups, and ginger honey teas daily. You have to keep yourself hydrated.
  • No alcohol and smoking: Alcohol and smoking will dehydrate your body and make you prone to altitude sickness. We highly recommend travelers refrain from these substances.
  • High-carbohydrate meals: At high altitudes, you need more energy than usual. So, you have to eat high-carbohydrate meals. Include rice and chapati in your meals.
  • Listen to your body: Be aware of your body and listen to how it feels. Do not push yourself unnecessarily, and take breaks when needed.
  • Maintaining pace during Kora: Do not rush during the Kora. You do not have to match anyone’s speed. Walk at your own pace and enjoy the journey.

Kailash Mansarovar tour best time

The best time to do the Kailash Mansarovar overland tour is May to October. It is the warmest time of the year, so Kora is highly achievable. Mount Kailash’s location is high in the Himalayas.

Therefore, the weather usually remains unpredictable. However, the weather is the finest between May and October, and the climate is not freezing.

From December to April, the climate is very cold, Mansarovar Lake is frozen, and the region is covered with snow. Kailash Kora is very challenging in these months and also quite risky.

Are you wondering about the monsoon period between June to August? Kailash Mansarovar route is within the rain-shadow area of the Himalayas, so it’s an arid region. Therefore, rainfall is very light and less frequent.

The route remains accessible and safe for the pilgrims. However, you will enjoy the monsoon season to the fullest in Kathmandu and till Kerung. Once you continue to Saga and get close to Darchen, the climate becomes arid, with little to no rain.
