The whole Nepal follows its own calendar system known as the Bikram Era or Bikram Sambat. Bikram Sambat is the approved calendar of Nepal. This era are found on old Nepali coins, stone and copper inscriptions and official writings. New Year is known as Nawa Barsha (नव बर्ष) in Nepali Language. Nawa Barsha usually occurs between April 11th-15th and this year it’s on April 14th. The year in Nepal starts on Baisakh-the first month from which the New Year begins. While Nepal uses a solar calendar for religious, festivals, birthdays and death anniversaries. Nepali New Year is an official public holiday in Nepal, which is celebrated with parades, feasts and family reunions.

Nepali New year is established by emperor Vikramaditya. So, New Year belongs to the history of Bikram Sambat. Various rituals are conducted and yearly annual carnivals like Bisket Jatra, Sindoor Jatra, and Bode Jatra are passionately carried out to welcome the New Year in Traditional Style.

Because of the extremely ingrained traditions of Nepal more than sixty ethnic groups, there are in fact nine different New Year’s days in Nepal. All of the nine new years are celebrated, but Nepal Sambat is regarded as the “National New Year”, bringing some facade of unity in the middle of great linguistic, cultural and historical diversity.

On this day, people wear traditional dress, drums and cultural music plays as they march, and decorate arches and banners are seen over the streets and markets. Also you can attend the official New Year greetings from president of Nepal or can view it on television.
